STEP #1: STICK

Once you are satisfied with the results from the tester strip...

Create the design layout:

  • Cut out each individual stencil by cutting along the white square border around each graphic.
  • Layout your stencils on your chosen wall surface.
  • Use masking tape or painter's tape if you would like to temporarily see how your design looks on your wall space.

Reveal the adhesive side of the stencil (remove the backing paper):

  • Place the stencil on the ground with the backing side (the side with the grid lines) up.
  • Starting from the corner, separate the backing from the blue stencil.
  • Peel away the backing paper with one hand
  • Place your other hand on the blue stencil and hold the stencil to the ground.
  • Remove the backing paper SLOWLY to ensure that the entire stencil properly separates from the backing paper.

Apply the stencil to the wall:

  • Use your hands to press and smooth the stencil against the wall.
  • Make sure to smooth out any wrinkles created while applying the stencil to the wall.
  • Repeat this step with each individual stencil, until all stencils are applied to the wall in the layout you want.
  • At this stage the stencils can be removed from the walls and repositioned as many times as you like. However, remove the stencil SLOWLY to ensure that the stencil remains in tact.

Expose the stencil (remove the application paper):

  • Please note that the stencil cannot be repositioned once the application paper is removed.
  • Start with a corner of the stencil and separate the application paper from the blue stencil.
  • Peel away the application paper SLOWLY with one hand.
  • Use the other hand to apply pressure to the stencil against the wall.
  • Continue to smooth the stencil against the wall as the application paper is removed.

After all of the application paper has been removed, the cut-out areas of the stencil will be exposed and you are ready to paint.

STEP #2: PAINT

  • Prepare the room for painting by placing necessary drop cloths underneath the area you will be painting and covering any items such as light switches, baseboards and/or window trim that may be at risk for drips while painting.
  • Select the type of brush, roller or applicator you wish to use in order to apply the paint; keep in mind that each applicator will result in a slightly different look. See the Stenciling Tips page for our recommendations on the types of applicators.
  • Apply the paint color of your choice to the cut-out area of the stencil. You may paint over the blue stencil, but be sure not to paint beyond the borders of the stencil. Depending on the base color on the wall and the color of paint you choose for the stencils, you may need to apply two coats of paint.

STEP #3: PEEL

Once the paint is tacky or has flashed, the stencils should be removed from the wall. Peel the stencils away from the wall gently and discard the stencils.
