THE BIRTH OF GIANT WALL STENCILS.COM
When we found out we were expecting our first son, we set out decorating his room in the traditional manner. We painted the room blue and purchased a cute bedding set from the local baby store. The walls were decorated with the coordinating wall art that came with the bedding set. We liked the end result, but when we found out we were expecting our second son (affectionately referred to as “the Deuce”), we wanted to do something different...
The Deuce’s room is a unique space with vaulted ceilings. The wall opposite the window was a huge canvas, and it was a struggle to determine what to do with open wall space. As we did not want another typical, blue boy’s room, we settled on a zoo theme in green with brown accents. Since it was difficult to find wall decorations that would not look miniscule on the large wall space, my wife had the idea to hand-paint outlines of animals. I, of course, thought she was nuts, especially considering I’ve seen 2 year olds with more artistic ability than my wife! So I convinced her that we would need to use stencils instead of hand-painting if we wanted the end result to look halfway decent...and thus, my search for giant wall stencils began!
Unfortunately, we could only find wall stickers (too small and cheap looking) and stencils that were no where near the size we needed. So I decided to try and create my own. Our first attempt at stenciling was using banner paper affixed to the wall with painter’s tape, which we quickly realized worked fine for small sizes, but was disastrous for large sheets of paper. We, then, started reinforcing the tape with tacks, but this created extra work for us as we had to fill the extra holes created by the tacks.
I just knew that there had to be a better way…and then, I realized that we could combine the idea of the wall stickers with stenciling to create a stencil sticker. This creates the best of both worlds as the application of the stencil to the wall is just as easy as applying a sticker to the wall, while you have the ability to customize your stencil with any paint color resulting in designer quality room accents without the high price of a professional! The end result of our experiment was amazing, and as we showed off the room to our family and friends, we realized that others would benefit from our stencils as well. And so, our unborn, little Deuce is the inspiration for Giant Wall Stencils.com. Hopefully, you will find our stencils to be as easy to use as we did, while creating that designer-quality look that will have family and friends thinking you spent a small fortune to create!
